October 22 – Reykjavik / Northern Lights Hunting

Good morning and welcome to Iceland! Iceland is full of surprises! For one, it isn’t covered in ice! It’s a stunning mix of green plains, wild volcanic scenery, beautiful coasts and lakes, spouting geysers, hot springs, mud pools, clean, fresh air and sophisticated cities. Upon arrival at Keflavik International Airport, be met by our Local Tour Guide and motorcoach and head into Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital city of just over 140,000 people. We enjoy a guided city tour of Reykjavik, the heart of Iceland’s cultural and economic activity, including a stop at the National Museum. Continue to the quaint town of Hveragerdi, where we’ll check-in to our hotel accommodations and enjoy an evening welcome dinner together. Later this evening and into tonight, we head out with our Local Guide for our first attempt at going “Northern Lights Hunting!” (D)

October 23 – South Shore / Seljalandsfoss & Skogafoss Waterfall / Black Sand Beach

After breakfast, our adventure to the South Shore begins! We journey through small villages and farmlands along Iceland’s majestic mountains. Iceland is also famous for its waterfalls, and we’ll see two of the most magnificent – the Seljalandsfoss – which tumbles over high rock escarpments allowing you to walk behind the waterfall, and Skogafoss. We visit the Skogar Folk Museum and learn about the preservation and cultural heritage of Southern Iceland. Continue to the seashore, passing by sheer cliffs with an opportunity to step out on the beautiful Reynisfjara black sand beach. Our accommodations this evening is just outside of the village of Vik – the southernmost village in Iceland. (B)

October 24 – Reykjanes Peninsula / Blue Lagoon

This morning, head for the rough tracks of Reykjanes, one of the most active volcanic areas in Iceland. Then, a remarkable life-enriching experience awaits this afternoon when we visit the Blue Lagoon. The Blue Lagoon is a lake of warm-mineral rich geothermal water, internationally renowned for its healing prowess and beneficial effect on the skin. Located in the middle of a lava field in the pure and beautiful Icelandic wilderness, water is heated by underground volcanic activity at a depth of over 5,400 feet and is pumped to the surface to form this man-made wonder. Visitors from all over the world come here in search of health, relaxation and an exotic experience. You’ll get to soak in the pleasantly warm mineral-rich water and includes a silica mud mask, use of towel and the first drink of your choice! This evening we arrive back in Reykjavik and check-in to our centrally located hotel for our three-night stay in the city. (B)

October 25 – Whale Watching Tour / Northern Lights Hunting

A special morning is planned as we head to the nearby dock for our whale watching excursion! This three-hour tour features a naturalist guide on-board the vessel who will share knowledge of these magnificent creatures while searching for pods of whales in the area. After the tour, enjoy some free time in the vibrant city center this afternoon before returning back to the hotel. Tonight is our second attempt at going “Northern Lights Hunting!” (B)

October 26 – Golden Circle Day Tour

On our full-day tour of the Golden Circle, enjoy scenic drives along with fascinating geological and historic sites of the island. Our excursion includes a drive to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Thingvellir National Park – a remarkable geological site and one of the few spots in the world where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is seen above the water. The amazing canyon that runs through the park is a meeting point of two of the earth’s tectonic plates. You’ll see outstanding natural wonders when you visit Geysir, Iceland’s most famous area for thermal activity. View “Strokkur”, one of the most active geysers, and “Gullfoss” (Golden Waterfall), Iceland’s most famous waterfall. Before returning to Reykjavik, we visit a local farm for the chance to meet some of the native Icelandic horses. After our tour this evening we enjoy a farewell dinner together. (B, D)

October 27 – Return Home

Following breakfast, transfer to Keflavik International Airport and bit a fond farewell to amazing Iceland, as you return home with many memorable life-enriching experiences. Upon arrival in Omaha, say goodbye to your fellow travelers and Moostash Joe Tour Director as you arrive back at your initial pick-up points. (B)

Why travel to Iceland?

Iceland is one of the most beautiful, less traveled countries in the world. With world-class accommodations, some of the world’s freshest seafood and an incredible diversity of geography, it’s certainly not to be missed by any traveler. The area of Iceland is about the size of Ohio, with a total population on the entire island of around 400,000 people (the state of Ohio has nearly 12 million!). Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital city of around 140,000 people, and the northernmost capital city in the world, is a lively, sophisticated, modern city keeping much of its charm and nostalgia.

What will the weather be like in Iceland?

Despite its icy name, it doesn’t snow as much in Iceland as you may think, especially near Reykjavik. Iceland in October is mild yet very unpredictable, especially in spring and autumn. Average highs this time of year range in the 40’s with average lows in the 30’s. Just like the Midwest, a beautiful, sunny day can suddenly turn windy and rainy or vice versa.

Will we see the Northern Lights?

That’s the plan! With dark skies and mild temperatures, October is a very favorable month to see the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) in Iceland. During this special departure date, there will be two attempts to a location selected by our local guide that will offer optimal viewing of this amazing natural phenomenon. Because it is a natural phenomenon, sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Language, Currency, Time Zone, Electrical Outlets

  • Most Icelanders speak fluent English. English and Danish are mandatory subjects in primary school.
  • Iceland’s currency is called the Icelandic Krona (ISK). As of February 2025, $1 US Dollar equals about 120 ISK.
  • Iceland operates on the Western European Time Zone and is five hours ahead of Central Daylight Time.
  • Icelandic electrical standards are the same as other Northern European countries (50Hz, 240 volts) so North American electrical devices will require converters and/or adapters. For more information, please consult an electronics retailer.
